Leon Barnett has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association after throwing a ball at the referee.
The incident took place in the closing stages of Norwich's 2-0 defeat to Portsmouth on Saturday.
After receiving his second yellow card of the game for giving away a decisive penalty, Barnett threw the ball at match official Simon Hooper in a moment of madness.
Although the player was quick to apologise, it has not saved him from further disciplinary action from the FA.
"I went in straight after the game to the referee and the gaffer to say sorry for my actions," Barnett told the club's official website.
"I knew immediately what I did was wrong. What happened was out of character for me and I wanted to apologise for doing what I did."
