Leeds United manager Simon Grayson says he will make a decision on Amdy Faye and Ramon Nunez's future in the coming days.
Both players are currently on short-term contracts at Elland Road which are due to expire later this month.
The pair have failed to secure regular football during their time in West Yorkshire and it had been thought they could be allowed to depart.
However, with Neil Kilkenny playing with Australia at the Asia Cup this month and transfer-listed Bradley Johnson's future uncertain, Grayson is mulling over extending their stays.
"It's been difficult for both players," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
"Ramon's played bit parts but he's done well in training and still looks a player.
"We've got some very good players who can't get into my 18 at the moment, simply because of how well the team is doing.
"Amdy's similar and he's been in and out. We've got to make a decision on them but we have to be careful that we don't leave ourselves short.
"If we don't extend their contracts then we'd need to have other options available to come into the team and the squad."
Manchester City's Michael Johnson has declared his interest in joining Leeds as he bids to make a successful return to playing following a two-year injury nightmare.
It has been suggested City could subsidise a potential move for the midfielder and Grayson believes it demonstrates how far the club have progressed based on players they are being linked with.
"When you're linked with that sort of player, it shows that you're doing something right as a club," he continued.
"We've been linked with some top, top players who any club in the country would take.
"It shows what we're capable of doing if we need to go out and make signings. But anything we do has to be right for club and the squad."
