Peter Halmosi is hoping to leave Hull City in January and has asked the Tigers to terminate his contract.
The winger has struggled to make any meaningful impact at the KC Stadium following his arrival on a £2million deal from Plymouth in the summer of 2008.
The Hungary international has made just four league starts for Hull and has not been involved under new manager Nigel Pearson this season.
Halmosi, 31, has now informed the East Yorkshire outfit that he is keen to kick-start his career in new surroundings and hopes they will agree a severance deal.
He told Hungarian daily Blikk: "I asked my club to terminate my contract; I hope I'll be a free agent in a couple of days."
Reports in Hungary have suggested Halmosi could return to Szombathelyi Haladas, where he spent a spell on loan earlier this year, but he also has offers from Austria.
And Haladas general director Miklos Toth admitted they may not be able to compete with the financial rewards on offer from other clubs.
"We know that we would be much stronger with him if he were back. But unfortunately we couldn't compete with an offer of a foreigner club," Toth told Blikk.
