Adrian Mutu's future at Fiorentina appears bleak after the former Chelsea man deserted training on Wednesday.
The Serie A strugglers are threatening legal action against the striker for leaving the training session early and without giving a reason.
Romanian Mutu, who returned from a nine-month drugs ban in October, has been dropped from the squad to play Bologna on Thursday as a result of the incident.
Fiorentina has also announced that there has been a meeting between the Italian club and Mutu's agent, Giovanni Becali, regarding his future.
"Adrian Mutu today abandoned training without giving any justification," said the club in a statement.
"Such insubordination and lack of respect for the shirt and the team, the latest in a sequence of similar acts by Mutu, has forced Fiorentina to consider legal action.
"Considering the fact he has missed training, he will not be called up for the away game against Bologna.
"His future has been discussed in a meeting between the club and the player's agent."
Mutu, who was sacked by Chelsea in 2004 for testing positive for cocaine, now looks certain to be sold in this month's transfer window.
The 31-year-old is on the radar of Bologna and Cesena, according to agent Becali, while Fiorentina could let him go to a non-Italian side without a fee.
His possible exit would make it highly unlikely the club, who currently sit a disappointing 15th in the Serie A standings, would allow their other main striker Alberto Gilardino to leave amid speculation of interest from Juventus.
