Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Wayne Rooney will be fit for Manchester United's next game against Tottenham Hotspur.
Rooney is currently carrying an ankle injury which was picked up during the closing moments of the 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day.
He sat out last midweek's win over Stoke City and was expected to be in contention for Sunday's FA Cup third round tie against Liverpool.
However, Ferguson opted against taking a risk on the England striker for the success over their arch-rivals and now expects Rooney to be ready for the weekend trip to Tottenham.
Reaction
"I could have put him on the bench but there was no point," said Ferguson.
"He just felt it again on Friday and when he came in on Saturday morning you could see there was a reaction. At that point, we said no."
The United boss also expects captain Nemanja Vidic to be fit for the game at White Hart Lane after the defender sat out the Liverpool win.
However, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar might need another week to recover from a flu virus that has laid him low for all three games in 2011 so far.
