Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers plans to dip into the transfer market after learning centre-back Garry Monk is facing three months out of action.
Monk suffered medial ligament damage in the FA Cup victory over Colchester on Saturday and will not be back in action until April at the earliest.
There were fears that the 31-year-old had suffered a repeat of his 2006 cruciate injury, but scans have revealed the damage is not as serious as first feared.
However, Rodgers will still be without a key member of his squad for a crucial period in the season and will now attempt to bring in cover as the Swans target promotion to the Premier League.
"I'm absolutely gutted for him," the Swansea boss told the South Wales Evening Post.
"He's an outstanding leader and a great man and I've loved working with him. He's an excellent lad and we speak a lot.
"For sure we'll have to look to do something in the window. We need to do something.
"There was nothing in the tackle, but sometimes the knee just opens up."
