James Collins insists Aston Villa are doing everything in their power to rediscover their form after the 1-1 draw with Birmingham City.
The Wales international rescued a valuable point for the Midlanders in Sunday's derby clash after cancelling out Roger Johnson's opener.
Collins has been a fixture in the Villa team, but his second campaign for the club has been of stark contrast to last term, with Gerard Houllier's men engulfed in a relegation battle this season.
But the centre-back claims Villa will take heart from the draw at St Andrews after lifting themselves out of the relegation zone.
The 27-year-old told Sky Sports: "The Birmingham derby is always a tough game, the pitch wasn't the best and the fans are against you and we could have gone the other way after going a goal down.
"But we showed character to come back. Looking back we had enough chances to win but we've got to be happy with a point."
Collins admitted Villa have underperformed dramatically this season and the defender hopes it will prove a platform for improvement.
He added: "We know we haven't played well enough all season. We've been under par compared to where we were last season and we know we have to work hard to get back to those levels."
