Birmingham are ready to step up their interest in Leicester star Richie Wellens, skysports.com understands. Blues have held a long-term interest in the classy midfielder and are now prepared to test Leiceser's resolve to keep hold of Wellens. The midfielder is regarded as one of the best players outside the top flight after impressing in the Championship for the Foxes and Doncaster previously. Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is keen to bring some creativity to his side and he has been linked with Blackpool's Charlie Adam, but Wellens could be a more viable option for the St Andrews boss. McLeish could face competition for Wellens with Wigan thought to be keeping tabs on the former Manchester United youngster. Leicester are aware of the growing interest in Wellens and are trying to keep hold of the playmaker by offering him a new deal at the Walkers Stadium. The Foxes would be loathe to lose Wellens as Sven Goran Eriksson sees him as a vital component in his squad as he looks to build a side capable of winning promotion.
