Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has confirmed an interest in signing Stephane Sessegnon from Paris St Germain.
The Black Cats boss is looking to reinforce his attacking options after Darren Bent's £18million move to Aston Villa and Sessegnon is one of his targets.
The 26-year-old Benin international has been linked with a move from PSG after reportedly refusing to train for the French outfit after a fall-out with manager Antoine Kombouare.
And although PSG president Robin Leproux said on Wednesday they are determined to hang on to the versatile midfielder beyond January, Bruce has admitted he has been trying to negotiate a move.
"Stephane can play in the middle, out wide or in a front three and he is a good player," he told the club's official website.
"It is ongoing but it has been going on for a couple of weeks now. We're hopeful of getting something done."
Bruce has revealed he has "four or five" strikers on his radar following Bent's departure.
But any signing will be a short-term measure, with Bruce insisting any big-money buy will have to wait until the summer.
"We will be careful and splashing big money now just isn't going to happen," he added.
