West Brom are optimistic Graham Dorrans and Steven Reid will resume training by the end of the week after recovering from injury.
But Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo admits the duo are unlikely to be involved in Tuesday's Premier League clash with Wigan.
Utility man Reid has been sidelined with a knee problem, while midfielder Dorrans missed the weekend defeat at Blackburn with a twisted ankle sustained in training.
Di Matteo said: "Graham is getting better. We are expecting him to join us at the end of the week but he is doubtful at the moment [for the Wigan game].
"Steven is also doubtful but we also expect him to join us - hopefully by the end of the week
"It's a bit different with him though as he has been out longer."
Di Matteo is still trying to bring in new players before the transfer window closes on Monday after losing out to Stoke in the bid to sign striker John Carew from Aston Villa.
He said: "The situation is that we are a work in progress. We are trying to get things done and are working away.
"I've always said that I wasn't going to do anything just for the sake of it. There is no point in that.
"It's anybody's guess what will happen. It's not always in our control so it's difficult to answer the question as to what will happen.
"We are West Bromwich Albion and we are trying to do our best. I can guarantee the staff are trying their hardest."
