Veteran keeper happy to earn clean sheet
Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt believes Saturday's battling draw at Bolton was good preparation for a six-pointer at West Brom.
The 0-0 FA Cup fourth round clash was low on spectacle but it resulted in a much-welcomed clean sheet and the banishing of some personal demons for Pollitt.
The 38-year-old was given his chance to impress at the Reebok with first-choice shot-stopper Ali Al Habsi unable to play against his parent club.
Wigan sit just a point from safety and have the opportunity to drag the Baggies further into the relegation mire, the definition of a six-point clash and one Pollitt is desperate to win.
"It was vital for us to put in a good performance before we go to The Hawthorns," Pollitt told
the Sun.
"We need to get out of the bottom three and there's a chance to do that if we can win on Tuesday. That is a massive game for us, that is our bread and butter.
"We got something out of this game after a couple of defeats and we want to build on that.
"We have to go there feeling confident and in a positive frame of mind."
Battering
Saturday's dour 0-0 draw may not have set the world alight, but it marked the first Wigan start for Pollitt since the final game of last season.
The Latics were thumped 8-0 by newly-crowned champions Chelsea, a game that Pollitt, despite spending two decades in the game, still has trouble coming to terms with.
"It was a nice change from my last start. to come here and keep a clean sheet. I was a bit shell-shocked after that Chelsea match to be honest," added the keeper.
"I've had to wait a long time for another start and it's nice to be able to say you kept a clean sheet in your latest game, rather than talk about losing 8-0 to Chelsea!"
