Liverpool full-back Martin Kelly is out of the England Under-21 squad for Tuesday's friendly against Italy.
The 20-year-old right-back played the full 90 minutes in the Reds' 1-0 win at Chelsea on Sunday, but sustained a knock during the match at Stamford Bridge.
Kelly's withdrawal not only marks a blow for the defender, who has broken through to become a standout performer since Kenny Dalglish took over to turn the club's form around.
It is also bad news for Young Lions boss Stuart Pearce, who has now lost six defenders for the match in Empoli.
Chris Smalling, Kieran Gibbs, Micah Richards, James Tomkins and Kyle Walker, who was promoted to the senior squad, have all had to be withdrawn.
Pearce has also lost Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson, Bolton's on-loan striker Daniel Sturridge and Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph.
Leeds skipper Jonny Howson was called in on Sunday as a replacement, and joins Chelsea's Josh McEachran, Barnsley's Kieran Tripper, Leicester loanee Kyle Naughton and Crystal Palace striker James Vaughan.
