Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean has praised Ryan Nelsen for his attitude in training in a difficult week for the New Zealand international.
Nelsen continued to report for duty despite not knowing if family and friends were safe following the devastating earthquake which hit Christchurch earlier this week, while his sister also gave birth to a baby boy.
And the New Zealand skipper will take his place at the heart of the Rovers defence on Saturday for the clash at Aston Villa after turning down the offer of some compassionate leave.
"I asked Ryan if he wanted to have some time off and get back home but, typical Ryan, he wanted to do his session," said Kean.
"It gave him a different focus for a couple of hours and that's what he wanted. Thankfully everything's okay and his sister's well.
"If you take the weekend off and you go away then I think the whole thing builds up on top of your shoulders.
"If he can train and play and then go back home and support his family I think that's as good a way as there can be to really deal with it."
