Boss wants Scholes on staff as he seeks to persuade him to stay

Sir Alex Ferguson wants Paul Scholes to become a coach at Old Trafford as he seeks to persuade him to sign a new deal with the Red Devils. The 36-year-old midfield maestro has often hinted he would like to play for Oldham - the club he grew up supporting - before he hangs up his boots. But Fergie believes he has still got what it takes to play at the top level and wants the former England international to agree to a new one-year deal. While Scholes wants assurances about the number of games he would start, the United boss insists he still has an important role to play at the club.

Proud person

He told the Sunday Mirror: "I want Scholes to stay, but he is such a proud person. "He wants to play in every game and I fully understand that. "But if we can get him to buy into the way I have been using him, sparing him in some games and using him in important matches, then he is of fantastic value to us. "Paul has a place on the staff here when he retires and everybody at United wants him to stay on."
