Promising frontman pens new deal at Turf Moor

England U21 international Jay Rodriguez has signed a two-year contract extension at Burnley. The highly-rated striker was due to see his current deal expire at the end of the season. He has, however, now committed his future to the club and will remain part of the set-up at Turf Moor until June 2013. The 21-year-old is a product of the Clarets' academy system, stepping up into the senior fold back in 2007. Since then he has made over 80 appearances for the club, while also taking in loan spells at Stirling Albion and Barnsley. He has really risen to the fore this season, after returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, and has scored 10 goals in 37 outings.

Improving

Rodriguez was also handed his England U21 debut by Stuart Pearce in a friendly date with Italy in February. "There was never any doubt in me signing. It's a great club to be at," he told Burnley's official website upon penning his new deal. "It's brought me along as a player massively and I think it still can in the future. "It's been a great season so far and I've still got a lot more to do. This season has been brilliant and I just hope it continues. "This season has gone better than I ever would have wished. All the awards, being called up to the U21s, it's been unbelievable. "But I know I've got to improve and if I don't, all those things won't have meant anything. I've just got to work hard and see where that takes me."
