St Pauli defender Moritz Volz is set to miss the rest of the Bundesliga season after breaking his shin in training.
The former Fulham man, who joined the Hamburg based club last summer after spending almost a year searching for a club, suffered the injury after a collisson with team-mate Gerald Asamoah.
The 28-year-old will be a big miss after managing to hold down a regular starting berth in Holger Stanislawski's side.
"This is a shock for me," said Volz. "I will now have to agree with the club doctors what will be the best course of treatment to get me back onto the field as quickly as possible."
Meanwhile, Stanislawski said: "This is very bitter for Volzy and for the team.
"We have lost yet another alternative in the defence, but we have got to come through this. I wish him a quick and good recovery."
Volz also denied that Asamoah was to blame for the injury.
"It was just a normal tackle," he said.
"I was just very unfortunate to get injured. Gerald has absolutely no blame at all for the injury."
St Pauli are currently sitting in the bottom three, although they are just one point off safety with 11 games remaining.
Meanwhile, the club are hopeful that goalkeeper Thomas Kessler will remain at the Millerntor-Stadion beyond the end of the season.
The stopper is currently on-loan from Cologne and their manager Volker Finke told spox.com: "He is going to remain on loan during next season.
"If he will be with St Pauli next season it will be sorted out between Thomas Kessler and them."
