David James has confirmed his intention to remain a Bristol City player next season.
The 40-year-old keeper joined the Robins last summer on a one-year deal, with the option of another year.
And after overcoming a shaky start to the current campaign, the former England international believes City can challenge for promotion next season.
"I'll be here, for sure," he told the
Evening Post. "I checked with my agent and asked him if I needed to sign anything and I don't think I do. It's a carry-on clause and that is what I intend doing.
"The fact there was the option of a second year was a massive incentive to me when I first signed my contract, because I didn't just come here to be put out to grass and see out my career.
"We've shown during the second part of this season what we are capable of when the team plays with belief, and I think the future is exciting.
Premier League dream
"I want to be a part of that and try to help Bristol City reach the Premier League.
"What I've seen since the first 10 games is what I signed for in the first place - a side capable of doing things."
James has been an ever-present in the league and although he will turn 41 before the start of next term, the ex-Portsmouth keeper has no concerns about his fitness.
"In physical terms, I feel better now than at the beginning of the season when I came back from the World Cup," he said.
"At first, I didn't realise how physically demanding that tournament was, not just playing the games, but also the training camp and all the travelling that went with it.
Feeling fit
"There was a very quick turn-around between playing in the World Cup and the first Championship game and I found it difficult to begin with.
"But now I feel good, mentally and physically, and the work I have done in the gym with the fitness coach, Glenn Schmidt, has stood me in good stead. I see no reason why I cannot go on for another season."
And City boss Keith Millen would be happy for James to stay at Ashton Gate, saying: "He has done a fantastic job for us and I hope he is with us next season. I'm sure he will be, it's just a matter of him giving us the official notification."
