Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer would be an ideal signing for Manchester United, according to Old Trafford legend Peter Schmeichel.
Germany international Neuer has one year left on his contract with Schalke and is wanted by Bayern Munich, who plan to begin transfer negotiations in the coming months.
But it was reported earlier in the season that United were scouting the 25-year-old and Sir Alex Ferguson witnessed Neuer's excellence firsthand in Tuesday's UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg.
The goalkeeper was responsible for ensuring the score was only 2-0 and Ferguson offered his congratulations after the final whistle to increase speculation that he wants Neuer as a replacement for the retiring Edwin van der Sar.
Schmeichel, the goalkeeper in United's Treble-winning season of 1999, is no doubt about Neuer's suitability, as he told Sky Sports News: "He is probably the best goalkeeper in the world.
"He is 25 years of age. He's been captain for that team for a number of years. He is very mature in the way he plays.
"He doesn't make mistakes - I haven't seen him make a single mistake - and the way he played yesterday, he wasn't lucky in the way that he saved the shots and one-on-ones, it was very calculated.
"I just thought his overall game was fantastic and absolutely well-suited for Manchester United."
