Aberdeen captain Paul Hartley has announced he is retire from football at the end of the season
Hartley has been out of action for the last two months with a knee injury with his last appearance coming against St Mirren in March.
The 34-year-old had a year left to run on his contract but decided his body was no longer capable of playing at the highest level.
Dons boss Craig Brown revealed earlier this month he planned to hold talks with Hartley over his future and the former Hearts and Celtic midfielder has decided to hang up his boots.
"I feel the time is right to stop being a footballer," Hartley told the Daily Record. "My body just doesn't have the energy or power as it used to.
"I didn't want to reach a stage where I might embarrass myself on the pitch.
"I've too much professional pride. It would also have been unfair on my team-mates and Aberdeen supporters."
