Preston North End manager Phil Brown is keen to agree a new contract to hang on to midfielder Darren Carter.
The 27-year-old has established himself in Brown's plans during the second half of the season after appearing to be on his way out under the manager's predecessor Darren Ferguson.
Carter was transfer listed by Preston 12 months ago and spent the first half of the current season on loan at Championship rivals Millwall.
However, Brown has been impressed by Carter and wants to keep the player at Deepdale following Preston's relegation to League One.
Brown told the Lancashire Evening Post: "Darren has given me everything I want from a midfielder - non-stop running and quality on the ball.
"We had statistics from games last season that showed he was covering a huge amount of ground.
"When a new manager comes in, you get some players who step up to the plate and some who step down. Darren Carter was one of those players to step up."
