Joleon Lescott is ready to fight for his place in Manchester City's starting XI should the club bolster their defence this summer.
City boss Roberto Mancini is expected to add to his squad during the transfer window after his team booked their place in next term's UEFA Champions League.
And centre-back Lescott, who joined City from Everton for £22million in 2009, is backing the club's plans to spend.
He said: "To progress, the club will need to buy players. If one of them is a central defender, I will have to fight for my position.
"I was confident I would play last season and it would just be the same again."
Reflecting on the 2010/11 campaign, which also saw City lift the FA Cup, Lescott praised the club's achievements, expressing his belief that they are a becoming a force to be reckoned with.
"It was a massive season for us," he said.
"To get into the FA Cup semi-final, beat Manchester United and then win the final speaks for itself.
"At Everton we were not expected to win the league. At City we are and it is something we believe can be done.
"We can take confidence from what we have achieved so far. Opposition teams will have to be more fearful when they play us."
