Portsmouth midfielder Liam Lawrence has called on the club's new owners to give manager Steve Cotterill the security of a long-term deal.
The former Notts County and Burnley boss impressed many last season for steadying the ship on the back of the club's relegation from the top flight.
Cotterill has two years left on his existing Fratton Park deal, while their new owners Convers Sports Initiatives (CSI) have already indicated they want their man at the helm to stay.
Lawrence is full of admiration for the job done by Cotterill so far and he believes if the tactician is given time and money he will be successful in turning around their fortunes.
"I think what needs doing is to tie down the manager to a longer contract and keep him at the club," he told the Portsmouth News.
"I think he has done a magnificent job. Last year he was given peanuts and he delivered.
"We even had an outside chance of the play-offs at one point. I think the gaffer is as good as anyone I have worked with.
"I also don't think he has ever had the backing that other managers have had. Tony Pulis had a tremendous chairman behind him and great backing.
"He has ended up doing an unbelievable job. I am sure if the gaffer got the same backing off the owners he could be just as successful."
