German side looking at signing veteran keeper as cover

Schalke have revealed they are eyeing a possible move for veteran goalkeeper Jens Lehmann. The Royal Blues have lost Germany international Manuel Neuer to domestic rivals Bayern Munich this summer and need to boost their goalkeeping options. Lehmann came out of retirement to sign a short-term deal with Arsenal for the end of last season as the English side went through a keeper crisis. And Schalke are now considering an approach for the 41-year-old, who began his career with a 10-year spell with the Royal Blues before leaving in 1998. The Gelsenkirchen-based outfit signed Ralf Faehrmann from Eintracht Frankfurt after Neuer's departure for Bayern.

Scenarios

But the club's general manager Horst Heldt confirmed they are looking at signing Lehmann as cover. "We always said that we want to hire a second goalkeeper if Manuel Neuer leaves," he told dpa. "There are various scenarios and Jens Lehmann is a part of it." Faehrmann insists he would welcome his arrival, with the 22-year-old saying: "I can learn a lot every day from Jens Lehmann."
