Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew is staying positive the club can still persuade Jose Enrique that his long-term future is at St James' Park.
The Spanish full-back has just one year left on his contract and the 25-year-old has been linked with a summer exit rather than the Magpies risking losing him for free in 2012.
Enrique is yet to respond to Newcastle's offer to extend his stay with the North East club, although Pardew is not assuming no news is bad news where the defender is concerned.
Pardew was delighted with Enrique's displays last term and he insists Newcastle are still working on ways to entice him to put pen-to-paper on a new contract.
"I'm still hopeful that Enrique - who was a big, big, big, big player for us last year - stays at the football club and we can entice him to stay, and obviously we are still working on that," said Pardew.
"Jose's holidaying and doesn't have too much on at the moment, so we are not confident we can keep him, but we are not scared of losing him. It's somewhere in between, really.
"When you have only got a year left on a player of his ability, of course you are vulnerable, and I think it's nervous times for us on him."
