Keeper very proud to have joined champions on five-year contract

Manchester United have finalised the signing of goalkeeper David de Gea on a five-year contract from Atletico Madrid. Sir Alex Ferguson revealed at the end of last season that he had identified the promising keeper as the man to replace the retired Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford. A deal had been on hold while De Gea competed for Spain at the European Under 21 Championship and he helped his country to glory in Denmark last weekend. The 20-year-old underwent a medical earlier this week and has expressed his delight at securing a move to the Premier League champions. "I feel very proud and I can't wait to start playing here," De Gea told MUTV. "When a club the size of Manchester United comes in for you it obviously makes you very, very happy. "I saw their interest as an extra motivation to work even harder to show off my ability. "It's a great privilege to be part of a club like United and I'm keen to do my best and show what I can do."

Presence

Speaking after Gary Neville's testimonial against Juventus in late May, United boss Ferguson outlined the qualities he had seen in De Gea. Ferguson told Sky Sports News: "He's a young goalkeeper, very quick, with good composure and presence. "He's an outstanding replacement for Edwin van der Sar. "We were looking for someone with the same types of qualities. One great quality Edwin always had was his composure and organisational ability. David De Gea is very similar that way." De Gea becomes United's third signing of the summer, with defender Phil Jones and winger Ashley Young having already completed moves to Old Trafford. Reports have put the fee for De Gea in the region of £17million to take Ferguson's summer spending spree to around the £50million mark.
