Irishman follows Brown from Old Trafford to Wearside

Sunderland have followed up the acquisition of Wes Brown with another raid on Manchester United to land John O'Shea. Brown's move from Old Trafford to the Stadium of Light was confirmed earlier on Thursday and the Black Cats tied up O'Shea's transfer just a few hours later. The Republic of Ireland international has been with United since the start of his professional career but will now embark on a new challenge at the age of 30. An experienced and versatile defender, O'Shea arrives at Sunderland for an undisclosed fee after a deal was agreed between the clubs. He passed a medical on Wearside and has now signed a four-year contract to become Steve Bruce's eighth permanent signing of the summer.

Delighted

O'Shea said: "Once I'd heard reports about the club and the people here, the ambitions and what the manager was all about, it was the only place I was going to come to." Bruce was also thrilled to secure the services of a player he has admired for a long time. "John has been a solid, consistent part of Manchester United's squad for well over a decade, which goes to show the fantastic pedigree of player we have signed. "He is a wonderful professional both on and off the field and his wealth of experience and versatility will be great attributes for us. "I'm delighted with the players we have been able to secure ahead of the new season."
