Rangers manager Ally McCoist insists he wants Madjid Bougherra to stay, having already rejected a bid for his services.
A Qatari club have seen one move rebuffed by Gers for the Algeria international's signature this summer.
Bougherra is thought to want a new challenge, although McCoist is not looking to cash in on the 28-year-old defender.
McCoist would love the former Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday man to pen new terms, although there other factors in the equation.
"I've had discussions with Madjid. I know his views, he knows mine," explained McCoist.
"Most importantly, we both know the importance of the next couple of weeks or next month at our club.
"Has Madjid told me he wants to go? I'd rather discussions between us remained private.
"Even if a bid was to come in towards the end of the window, I wouldn't want him to go.
"I would rather he stayed and if that meant an extension to his contract then that would be my ideal situation. But there are other factors that come into it.
"Does he want to sign another contract or does he want to go? I'd be happy to see him stay."
Meanwhile, McCoist is not giving up hope of bringing Spanish defender Carlos Cuellar back to Ibrox.
Gers are keen to bring the former fans' favourite back to Glasgow, although it remains to be seen whether Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish will sanction his exit.
"No deal is dead. Cuellar is certainly not a dead deal for us," he continued.
"There is still a bit of work to do before he could become a Rangers player."
