Scunthorpe's influential midfielder, Michael O'Connor, faces a race against time to feature in their opening day trip to Wycombe.
The Northern Ireland international has been sidelined for the past three weeks with a knee injury and has missed all six pre-season fixtures so far.
However, the 23-year-old resumed full training earlier this week and could play a part in the Iron's final pre-season friendly, against Barnsley, on Saturday.
He told skyports.com that he aims to be fit enough to make the squad for the Adams Park clash.
O'Connor said: "I have been training with the lads since Tuesday and did the warm-up before the Rotherham match as well without any reaction.
"It is a little sore, but I expected that because I've not been able to do a lot with it for the past three weeks.
"We've got Barnsley on Saturday, which is our final pre-season game, and I'm hoping to get 10-15 minutes if everything goes well in training on Friday.
"I will struggle big time to make it back for the opener, but I've got some double sessions booked in from now until then so hopefully I can boost my fitness up and be fit enough to make the squad at least.
"I've not been able to train for three weeks, so it has been a case of doing all my work in the gym, which isn't ideal and means that I am a bit behind the rest of the lads."
