Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers says Ferrie Bodde is still struggling with a persistent knee problem and remains unsure of when the midfielder will return.
The Dutchman has been out of action for 18 months as he continues to battle an ongoing cruciate ligament injury, which he first suffered back in November 2008.
Bodde was due to be out of contract at the Liberty Stadium this summer but was handed a one-year extension on his deal and had hoped to be fit for the start of the promoted Swans' maiden Premier League campaign.
However Rodgers admits the 29-year-old, who has failed with two previous comeback attempts, is still struggling with his knee.
"It's a slow process with Ferrie," Rodgers told the South Wales Evening Post. "It's something we are monitoring on a day-to-day basis.
"He came through the beginning of pre-season well.
"He has not taken a backward step, but it's one where he is still getting some pain in his knee, which doesn't let him feel that he can push on as much as he would like.
"He is working tirelessly with our medical team - we are doing everything we can to give him the opportunity to play, but it's not something you can rush. It's something we just need to do in Ferrie's own time.
"When he feels right, hopefully he will get back on to the field."
