Black Cats defender praises new boy after Anfield debut

Phil Bardsley hopes Wes Brown can maintain his high level of play after an impressive debut for Sunderland at Liverpool. The Black Cats emerged from their daunting trip to Anfield with a point following a 1-1 draw on Merseyside. Brown, who joined from Manchester United over the summer, was a stand-out performer, although Bardsley always knew he was a class act. Bardsley began his career at Old Trafford and he is delighted Sir Alex Ferguson decided his new team-mate was surplus to requirements.

Top-class

"Sir Alex makes some decisions and this one has come in favour of us because if Wes plays like that, he's up there as one of the best centre-halves in the country," he told the Sunderland Echo. "I have played with him before and I know what he can do. When he plays like he did on Saturday, he's top-class. "He's got unbelievable composure and in the air he wins everything. Overall, he's a fantastic player and a great lad as well. "We have just got to keep him on the pitch. He's had a few injuries in the past, but he's made a tremendous start."
