Jose Enrique wants to catapult Liverpool back into the UEFA Champions League and earn himself international recognition with Spain.
The 25-year-old completed a much-anticipated switch to Merseyside last week and was promptly installed into the team that earned a 1-1 draw with Sunderland.
Liverpool have finished outside the top four for the last two seasons and have spent heavily since January to try and reclaim a position amongst the elite.
Having made a quietly effective debut on Saturday, Enrique knows his new team will to display a significant level of quality if they are to achieve their aims.
"We want to get back into the top four this season and if we could win the Premier League that would be fantastic, but we have to be realistic," Enrique told liverpoolfc.tv.
"A lot of teams have spent money and for me this league is the most competitive one in the world.
"Seven teams could finish in the top four but we want to be there and we will do everything we can to make that possible."
Kenny Dalglish's new-look team played with a new-found sense of brio in the first half before losing their way after the interval.
But the left-back saw enough in that opening 45 minutes to suggest Liverpool can be a success this term.
Enrique added: "In the first half (against Sunderland) we played some unbelievable stuff and we need to do that for 90 minutes.
"If we can do that then we can beat anyone."
