Jose Enrique wants to taste UEFA Champions League football with Liverpool but admits he faces a difficult challenge to make it happen.
The Spanish left-back became the latest Anfield recruit before the start of the season with his £6million move from Newcastle.
Liverpool have missed out on the Champions League for the last two years and supporters are hoping Kenny Dalglish's £100million spree will see them claim a place amongst Europe's elite again.
Enrique has yet to play in the Champions League during his career and has revealed one of his reasons for moving to Merseyside was the lure of Champions League football.
"Everyone wants to be there. I've never played in the Champions League and it's a dream for me," he said.
"You have to be realistic, it's really difficult this year because the Premier League is the best league in the world and seven or eight teams here are really good.
"It's very difficult to be there but if we play like we played in the first half against Sunderland I think we can be there."
Over the last couple of seasons, Liverpool have tried to find a solution to their problematic left-back position.
Fabio Aurelio, though rich in experience, often succumbed to injury and left successive managers with a selection dilemma.
And the former Newcastle full-back expects a fierce battle to cement his status as the club's premier left-back.
"We have an amazing squad," he added. "He (Aurelio) has been unlucky with injuries but he's really good. I saw him playing for Valencia.
"It's good for the players to have competition because you know your work is never done."
