James Milner admits improving on last season's finish is Manchester City's main aim, but believes they are in contention for the Premier League title.
City have invested heavily again this summer, with £38million buy Sergio Aguero the most notable arrival, as Roberto Mancini looks to build on last season's third-place finish.
The Italian also led the club to FA Cup success, their first major trophy in 35 years, and Milner reckons strengthened City will put greater fear in opponents this season.
"We finished third last season, which was good, but we want to improve every season - and we're challenging," he told the Daily Star.
"We'll get on with our business, we know where we want to get to. Other clubs might fear City after last year and then this summer when they see the club spending money.
"When you spend a lot of money you need to back it up with something. We finished third and won a trophy so now it's down to us to improve again and make people take notice.
"As a team it was great for us to win the FA Cup and now we've done that, and got the first one out the way, it gives us the confidence to win more. Hopefully that is the first of many."
Milner, who joined the club from Aston Villa last season, concedes there is pressure on City to perform after last season's heroics, but he believes they are well equipped to deal with it.
"There is pressure there but we apply it to ourselves both as individuals and a team," he said.
"We want to succeed on the training field and in the games. The pressure we put on ourselves is always greater than the pressure from outside anyway.
