England defender Leighton Baines has been ruled out of the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales at Wembley on Tuesday night after suffering a hamstring injury in training on Sunday.
The Everton left-back has now returned to Goodison Park for treatment on the problem and will hope to recover in time for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Aston Villa.
Baines was an unused substitute for Friday's 3-0 victory over Bulgaria in Sofia with Ashley Cole firmly established as England's first choice.
Fabio Capello has elected not to call up a replacement for the fixture at Wembley where victory for England would take them a step closer to qualification.
A statement from the FA read: "Leighton Baines has returned to Everton, having sustained an injury in training on Sunday.
"Baines has been ruled out of England's Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales on Tuesday evening, and is now with his club for further treatment.
"No replacement has been called into the squad."
The Three Lions currently lead Montenegro by three points in the Group G qualifying table with the two nations due to go head-to-head in their final qualifier in Podgorica in October.
