Sunderland defender Titus Bramble is determined to capitalise on Anton Ferdinand's exit and fight for a place in manager Steve Bruce's back four.
Ferdinand left a gap in the Black Cats' defence when he departed for QPR in a transfer deadline day deal last month.
Bramble has found first-team opportunities limited since arriving at the Stadium of Light from Wigan last summer, with injuries and a lack of match sharpness hindering his progress.
However the 30-year-old, who is yet to feature for Sunderland this season, believes the sale of Ferdinand could provide him a golden chance to battle his way back into Bruce's plans.
"We all wish Anton the best. He's been a real character in the dressing room," Bramble told Journal Live.
"Him leaving will give someone else a chance, and hopefully that's me.
"It's always frustrating to not be playing, no one wants to train hard all week and then not play at the weekend - and I'm no different.
"I've struggled for a run of games over the last season or so but that's part of football. You have to deal with it and move on."
