Napoli midfielder Marek Hamsik believes his side's UEFA Champions League group game with Manchester City is cause for 'a great celebration' but is aware of the size of the task ahead of the club.
The 24-year-old is one of a number of Napoli players who are set to make their Champions League debut after helping the club to third place in Serie A last season.
Their trip to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday marks the club's first appearance in Europe's premier competition since 1991.
City meanwhile have not played in the European Cup since 1968 but thanks to the massive spending by owner Sheikh Mansour they begin their campaign as one of the favourites for the whole competition.
Hamsik acknowledges his side are up against it if they are to get a result against the Premier League side but feels their mere presence in the group stages is just rewards for their excellent campaign last year.
"Participation in the Champions League with the best European teams is a wonderful gift for the past season," Hamsik wrote on his official website.
"It will be a great celebration, for many of us it's the first match in the top European competition.
"Winning would be fantastic, but it will be difficult. We play against a team of great quality, full of champions."
