Everton boss David Moyes welcomed three much-needed points against Wigan as they recorded their first home win of the season.
The Toffees left it late though after falling a goal behind to Franco Di Santo's effort, with the hosts initially stiking back through Phil Jagielka's close-range header.
And just as the Latics looked to be heading towards a point, Everton snatched the win thanks to substitutes Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe.
The duo scored their first goals in English football, which pleased Moyes.
He told Sky Sports: "I thought with 15 minutes to go we weren't going to get it (the winner). We deserved to be in front after the first half but we weren't and Wigan stuck at it, got a bit better in the second half.
"They were always dangerous on the break but thankfully in the end we got the goals.
"We made some changes (in the second half) and for periods it didn't look as if it was going to work , but it did in the end."
Everton have a tough run of fixtures coming up in the Premier League starting with a trip to Manchester City next weekend before facing Merseyside neighbours Liverpool at home and ending with another tough journey, this time to Chelsea, two weeks later.
He added: "Well, I always thought it was important to get the three points today. We deserved it."
