Aston Villa boss Alex McLeish praised striker Gabby Agbonlahor after he scored a goal before making another for Darren Bent in a comfortable 2-0 home win against Wigan.
The striker inspired the side to their first ever home Premier League win over their opponents and only a series of fine saves by keeper Ali Al Habsi prevented Villa - still unbeaten in the league this season - from winning by a more emphatic margin.
And although McLeish believes the kind of form he showed on Saturday should earn him an England call-up, he doubts the player would be fit enough in any case, after picking up an injury.
He told Sky Sports: "He was a handful. We have worked in training to get the best out of Gabby. There's no use having that kind of pace if you're not going to use it and today he showed that to full effect.
"He's absolutely lightning but he had a problem at the end because he's been getting treatment for a back injury. We'll hope that he'll recover very quickly.
"I think, I don't know if he's in the England squad or whether it has been announced as yet, but I've got to say, I think he's a doubt for it.
"The form he's in is terrific, but he's been struggling with a back injury and we've had a chiropractor to do some manipulation on him. He did train during the week, but it was with a bit of difficulty."
McLeish also admitted he would allow Darren Bent leave if he received an England call after only just coming back from injury.
He added: "Bent is fully fit and if England are going to use him, then it would be great for him because he needs match practice. He's been out for a while.
"It was great to see him hit the back of the net. He had another great chance and a couple in the Newcastle game so we're getting chances, so as long as we can keep supplying guys like that then we'll score more than we'll miss."
