Sunderland striker Connor Wickham might have escaped a long-term injury after being told his knee problem is not as bad as first feared.
The 18-year-old had scans on Monday on the knee he damaged just seconds into Saturday's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Manchester United.
It was feared he could be facing a lengthy period on the sidelines and that would add to Sunderland's problems.
But on Monday night, Wickham revealed he had been given a more encouraging prognosis than expected, although he is yet to discover the full extent of the damage.
He said on Twitter: "Scans showing injury not as bad as first thought, waiting to see a knee specialist later in the week."
The Black Cats have been plagued by serious knee problems in the last 12 months and manager Steve Bruce would be hugely relieved if his £8.1million summer signing was not sidelined for a significant period.
