Sunderland have revealed that Connor Wickham's knee injury is not as bad as first feared, with no 'serious damage' suffered.
The Black Cats saw their young striker forced from the field early on during a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
It was suggested that the England U21 international had suffered cruciate ligament damage and was facing up to a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
He has, however, undergone rigorous medical tests since being stretchered off at Old Trafford and the news being fed back to Sunderland is positive.
Investigations
The Wearside outfit have stopped short of putting a timescale on Wickham's recovery, but are delighted to hear that the youngster will be back in their plans sooner than initially expected.
"Sunderland have announced that further investigations have shown that Connor Wickham has not suffered any serious damage to his knee," read a statement released on the club's
official website.
"The player has embarked on a rehabilitation programme as he recovers from the injury.
"Wickham left the field at Old Trafford after just 90 seconds on Saturday and underwent scans on Monday."
