David James is ready and waiting for a chance to play for England again.
The 41-year-old became first choice at the World Cup in South Africa following Rob Green's high profile blunder against the USA.
But he has not featured in Fabio Capello's plans since last summer and is now plying his trade in the Championship with Bristol City.
However, James told
Sky Sports News: "I'd never give up the opportunity to put myself forward. If I'm fit enough to play for my club, then I'm fit enough to play for my country.
"If needs be, I'd go out there and play. There's no higher reward than playing for your country."
Stronger
James is also convinced that West Ham goalkeeper Green is ready for a recall.
"The mistakes will make you stronger they say," he added. "I'm sure Rob Green will be back. He's an outstanding keeper and West Ham are doing well at the minute. So he'll be there, he'll be alright."
Other than Joe Hart, none of the goalkeepers in the current England squad play in the Premier League.
Scott Carson joined Turkish side Bursaspor in the summer and David Stockdale is on loan at Ipswich Town from Fulham.
The only other top-flight keeper who could be considered is Ben Foster, but he has made himself unavailable for international duty.
Sorry State
And James thinks that it is a sorry state for English football.
He added: "The fact that they aren't playing Premier League football at the moment is a sad indictment of how Premier League football is.
"Premier League clubs, English football clubs, have had goalkeeping coaches for 15 years and you would like to think in 15 years, there would be more top flight talent produced.
"For some reason it isn't and maybe it's just because it seems easier to go and get a goalkeeper from abroad."
