Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has insisted that his team should reach the UEFA Champions League knockout stage as group winners.
The Red Devils started the competition with two draws but they eventually found their feet by defeating Romanian team Otelul Galati twice.
If United take all three points against Benfica at Old Trafford on Tuesday night then they will only need a single point in their final game against Basle to qualify for the last 16 as group winners.
"You do want to finish top," Fletcher said.
"First and foremost you look to qualify for the knockout stages but we saw Arsenal finish second last season and end up with Barcelona in the first knockout round.
"Although people say you have to beat these teams if you want to win the competition, it is good to avoid them until later on.
"It also gives you little perks like having the second leg at home. There are a few aspects to topping the group which benefit you in the long run."
The Scotland skipper was left out of United's Premier League win over Swansea and is therefore expected to play in the upcoming Champions League clash.
And Tuesday night cannot come quick enough for the 27-year-old, who loves European nights at Old Trafford.
"It is still special," he said. "It is great hearing that music.
"It makes you feel you are part of the best club competition in the world. The atmospheres are fantastic. It is something you want to be a part of."
