Defender says new contract is merely awaiting signatures

Eric Abidal has revealed he is happy to be staying at Barcelona after confirming he is on the brink of signing a new contract. The defender's current deal expires at the end of the season and his agent recently raised fears he could leave Camp Nou due to the terms on offer from Barca. However, the European champions appear to have put forward a deal that is acceptable to Abidal and he is close to finalising the extension. Speaking after Barca's 3-2 victory at AC Milan in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday evening, the France international confirmed he is merely waiting to put pen-to-paper. "Now we are only waiting for the signatures for the new deal with Barcelona," Abidal told Canal Plus. "We are at 90 per cent for closing the agreement and I am happy because with this I can continue my adventure in Barcelona." Reports suggest Abidal will sign a two-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months depending upon the number of games played.
