Trotters take action after controversial sending off

Bolton have appealed the red card shown to Gary Cahill during Saturday's 3-0 defeat at Tottenham, it has been confirmed. The centre-back was dismissed at White Hart Lane following a late tackle on Scott Parker in the early stages of the Premier League clash. Referee Stuart Attwell decided that Cahill denied Parker a clear goal-scoring opportunity, despite the fact that the defender hauled down the 31-year-old 40 yards from goal when the visitors had plenty of cover. The Trotters players and management were furious with the red card and chairman Phil Gartside branded the decision an "absolute disgrace". Owen Coyle, whose team remain 18th following their latest defeat, has made it clear he feels Bolton have strong grounds for a successful appeal against Cahill's suspension. The manager, who has seen five of his players sent off in the league already this season, said after the game: "I will be appealing the decision as soon as I can. "It was baffling, bemusing."
