Steven Reid accepted responsibility for West Brom's 2-1 defeat by Wigan at the Hawthorns on Saturday.
The Ireland full-back opened the scoring with a free kick for the Baggies in the 33rd minute.
But it was his second-half foul in the box on Victor Moses that allowed the Latics to complete their comeback win through Jordi Gomez's penalty.
"I'm disappointed overall. I would have rather not scored and got a result," he told the Express and Star.
"I blame myself for the defeat. I should have stayed on my feet and unfortunately we couldn't get anything out of the game.
"We have conceded a few penalties this season and you never like giving away cheap goals like that.
"We played pretty well on Saturday, second half especially, and I hold myself responsible for their winning goal."
West Brom are three points above the relegation zone and face a key run of fixtures over Christmas, starting with Saturday's trip to second-from-bottom Blackburn.
"It looks like the top six or seven are pulling away a little bit, then you can pick any three from the rest to go down," added Reid.
"We're fighting for mid-table and below and I'm sure we will put a run of games together where we get a run of results.
"Hopefully, it will come sooner rather than later."
