Jose Enrique believes it is only a matter of time before Andy Carroll shows the Liverpool fans he is worth every penny of his big-money move at the start of the year.
The 22-year-old striker has struggled to make an impact at Anfield since his £35m switch from Newcastle on the last day of the January transfer window.
But Enrique has rushed to the defence of his team-mate after they became friends during their time together in the North East, insisting his goals will silence his critics.
He said in the Sunday Times: "For any player, the most important thing is confidence. In Newcastle he was a star. Coming here it is not like this. You have players who are before you and it is hard to understand that for him.
"With more confidence, Andy can make a difference for Liverpool. He is a fantastic guy. I don't tell you that because he is my team-mate, I say that because I know him for a long time.
"He is so friendly with everyone, he's good with Luis [Suarez]. He doesn't always understand [because of Suarez's limited English] but he is trying.
"I know what the people say about what he drinks, how he goes out, but he is a young lad - he can go out, everyone did at his age. Because he is a footballer he cannot do it? I don't think so.
"People say bad things about him because he is not doing really well but when he starts to score goals he can shut everyone up."
