Forward fails medical on Tyneside

Modibo Maiga's proposed move to Newcastle from Sochaux has fallen through after he failed a medical at the club, according to his agent. The Mali international was reportedly on the brink of a £6million move to Tyneside after agreeing a deal at the club, who have been tracking him since the summer. But the switch has collapsed following issues with the 24-year-old forward's fitness following a medical at St James' Park this week. L'Equipe has reported that a knee problem was the reason for him failing the examination but his agent, Karim Aklil, insists he is fully fit. He said: "I am disappointed by the turn of events. Modibo is in perfect physical condition and this was confirmed by specialists. "I am surprised by what has happened since his medical and the diagnosis was established by doctors authorised by the club." Maiga is under contract at Ligue 1 side Sochaux until 2014 but had previously made it clear he was keen to join the Magpies.
