Former Old Trafford youngster refuses to write off Ferguson's men

Newcastle defender Danny Simpson believes former club Manchester United can bounce back and retain their Premier League crown. Simpson helped the Magpies dent United's title hopes with Wednesday's 3-0 home win at St James' Park. The 25-year-old made a brilliant goalline clearance to deny Wayne Rooney reducing the arrears to 2-1 as Sir Alex Ferguson's men slumped to a second straight defeat. But the former Old Trafford trainee insists it would be foolish to write off United, who have allowed neighbours Manchester City to pull clear at the top.

Setbacks

Simpson said: "They've dropped three points behind City so they'll be gutted. "They've had setbacks and I'm sure they've lost two on the bounce before but they'll be even more up for it going to City at the weekend looking to put a marker down on them. "Sir Alex has been in that situation before and I'm sure he'll be fine. "If you write Man United off you're asking for trouble, aren't you? "They are a top-class team. City are doing really well but you cannot write United off and it'll probably go right down to the wire." Simpson reckons his goalline clearance was almost as good as scoring against United as he celebrated his 25th birthday on Wednesday in style. He added: "I said at Old Trafford when we played there my goalline clearance was like scoring a goal - Wednesday's was like a hat-trick!"
