Danny Guthrie is set to be rewarded for his man of the match display in Newcastle's 1-0 win against QPR on Sunday with a new contract at the club.
Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is keen to discuss a new deal with Guthrie after the midfielder seized his chance as a replacement for Cheick Tiote, who is away on African Cup of Nations duty.
Guthrie will be out of contract in the summer, but Pardew is planning to hold talks regarding an extension.
He told the Evening Chronicle: "He's out of contract, and I'll look to have a conversation with him and his agent this week and try to secure him. I want him to stay.
"He's got a great confidence on the ball, and he's happy on the stage. Not many people can play in front of 52,000 in terms of taking a risk, and he takes a risk."
"I'm pleased that Guthrie got man of the match."
With Leon Best also helping make light of Demba Ba's absence by scoring the winner against QPR, Guthrie admitted that patience is the key for those fringe players waiting in the wings.
"I did that last time and had six or seven games when I did well," said Guthrie. "I have just got back from injury, it was difficult but I'm glad to be back.
"We have had to be patient and be ready when called upon which we have done."
