Birmingham boss Chris Hughton says he would love to keep hold of Liam Ridgewell, amid speculation the defender could be on his way to local rivals West Brom.
Hughton - whose team currently lie sixth in the Championship table - is confident the 27-year-old will have no problems maintaining his level of performance if a move to the Premier League with the Baggies does not materialise.
Albion have already had one bid for the versatile defender rejected and Hughton admits he has no idea whether a deal will be completed before the January transfer window closes.
"I would be very happy for Liam to stay," said Hughton. "I have no doubt that if he does he will perform as well as he has always done.
"He's a good player but, not only that, he's a good person as well. He will always give his all in training and any game he plays in.
"What happens will be down to West Bromwich Albion and any offer they are prepared to put in and if they do so, the powers that be accepting that offer.
"If that happens then we will have to work around it. If not, then I would be very happy to have Liam here still."
Hughton added: "You try to make contingency plans - to have a squad we need to have going into a very tough tail-end of the season. It's not just about Liam, it's about making sure we can compete."
